Descript doesn't just add AI to video editing — it rethinks what editing is. The core insight is that most editing decisions are semantic, not technical. You want to remove the part where you said the wrong thing, shorten the rambling intro, cut the awkward pause. All of that is much faster when you're working with text.

Text-based editing works as advertised. The transcription is accurate enough that you can make clean cuts by selecting and deleting text, with the video and audio following automatically. Removing filler words — um, uh, like — happens with a single menu click. For podcast editing in particular, this workflow change is transformative.

Overdub, the AI voice cloning feature, is Descript's most remarkable technology. Train it on your voice with 10 minutes of audio, and you can type corrections that get rendered in your voice. It's not flawless — the prosody can sound slightly off — but for fixing a mispronounced word or updating a piece of information in an old recording, it works well enough to be genuinely useful.

Studio Sound, the AI noise removal, is another standout. It can take a recording made in a moderately noisy environment and render it clean. Not perfect, but good enough to make technically imperfect recordings publishable.

The tradeoffs: Descript's rendering can be slow, and the application is more complex than simple editors. There's a learning curve, particularly around its project structure. But for any creator producing regular video or podcast content, it's among the highest-leverage AI tools available.
